Abstract
New York, fin des années 1980. Dans le Lower East Side, une poignée de musiciens venus du jazz et de l’improvisation travaillent à redonner vie à la musique de leurs aïeux, le klezmer, dont il ne reste que peu d’échos depuis la destruction des Juifs d’Europe. Sous l’égide de John Zorn, ils créent une communauté rugissante, donnant naissance à une scène : la Radical Jewish Culture. Aujourd’hui, cette musique revivifiée, mêlée à toutes les influences de la diaspora juive et du cosmopolitisme new-yorkais, connaît un succès incontestable, aux États-Unis comme en Europe ou au Japon. Comment ces musiciens ont-ils mené ce travail contre l’oubli, afin de faire renaître de leurs cendres des mélodies issues du fin fond des shtetls, et de les rendre plus contemporaines que jamais ? Cet article se penche sur la genèse de ce mouvement musical dont l’histoire continue de s’écrire.
