We report on pockmark-like seafloor depressions, known to the local fishing industry in the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) region as 'Wonky Holes'. Ca. 100 Wonky Holes were identified from a side-scan survey of Halifax Bay, near Townsville on the central GBR shelf. They are depressions with a diameter of 10 to 30m and a depth of up to 4m, and occur in ca. 20m water depth. Wonky Holes resemble pockmarks, known sites of seepage of gas or water from the seafloor, in size and geometry. Seismic transects have revealed that Wonky Holes are associated with riverine/estuarine paleochannels. Preliminary results from salinity and conductivity measurements indicate that fresh groundwater flow may occur from these holes. We propose that submarine paleochannels provide a pathway for groundwater to be discharged into the near-shore zone, provided a connection to an inland hydraulic head exists.
