This article discusses a case study of a feeder main break in −31° F. weather in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The break flooded a main arterial road in Calgary and the water quickly froze in the sub‐zero degree weather. Crews located and shut off valves to isolate the system closer to the break location. The main was shut off by 9am, and fortunately, the system had enough built‐in redundancy to handle average daily demands without the broken feeder main. To avoid water hammer, water was pumped into the system slowly to refill the distribution system. The article describes how the city handled the freezing water and how storm drains were plugged. Cloudy water and low water pressure suggested that a press release should be issued advising customers to flush their pipes. The article discusses how the mode of failure was determined, along with the possibility of additional wire breaks occuring in the system.
