Abstract
The thesis project consists of a non-denominational chapel and cemetery on a small island in Indian Arm on the North Shore of Vancouver. The design attempts to create a sacred place for individuals with no religious beliefs or religious affiliations. The project explores several themes including the relationship of architecture to site, how architectural from can give meaning to the ritual of funeral without relying on religious symbolism and ways in which the spatial experience of the'site and the architecture can allow for individuals to connect with nature. To abstract the journey of the dead to another world, a sequence containing thresholds was designed to allow for a varied spatial and emotional experience as one moves in and through the site and the chapel. For example the experience of the sublime in the canal is intended to encourage the questioning of one's own existence.
