Abstract

Canada has extensive Arctic shipping during an open water season of approximately July through October, although there are more capable vessels that operate early and late season voyages. The paper will outline the community services delivered as well as mining operations and cruise activity. This will cover both the current and near future, and the possible changes that may occur as a result of implementation by the Government of Nunavut, of a Transportation Strategy that will be delivered during the first quarter of 2001. The paper will also look at the safety record of ship operations, based on a formal safety assessment that has been undertaken by the Author’s company. This will be compared with incidents in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, to provide a comparative incident base. Reference will also be made to the positive impact on marine safety by the introduction of regulations over the last two decades, and the possible future impact of the Polar Code.
