Abstract
Par-delà leur grande diversité, les membres de la mouvance altermondialiste, née dans l’opposition à l’OMC à Seattle en 1999, militent tous pour un « autre monde possible », qui passe par une autre façon de faire de la politique, elle-même indissociable d’une conception concurrente de la démocratie. Se basant sur l’analyse de discours et de formes d’engagement qui trouvent un large écho dans la culture politique contemporaine, l’article présente, dans ses grandes lignes, l’idéal-type de la « démocratie alter ». Le but est de restituer de manière cohérente les divers aspects d’un projet qui, originellement, fait fond sur la critique des dysfonctionnements de la démocratie représentative. Il ressort de cette reconstruction que les alters valorisent un modèle de démocratie radicale où la représentation est disqualifiée au profit de la représentativité comme source de légitimité du pouvoir, et qui pose le rapport État-société en termes de pression de la seconde sur le premier.
