Abstract
AMEC provided ice management planning and operational ice watch services for Statoil’s Summer 2000 Fylla Exploration Drilling Program, in the Davis Strait 130 km southwest of Nuuk, Greenland. Ice conditions in this remote area are not well known and turned out to be more extensive than anticipated. During the three-month program 230 icebergs were tracked and over 70 of these were successfully towed. This paper presents an overview of ice management for the Fylla program and the routine ice watch activities performed. Several scenarios from the program are described to illustrate the high level of iceberg activity and the corresponding successful ice management responses initiated for each. The essential elements of the program are highlighted, and some future applications of the collected data and knowledge gained for future ice management in Greenland, and for the East Coast of Canada are discussed.
