Abstract
Un certain « sieur de Lavenage » tente en 1660 de faire de la gravure un métier juré, entraînant la protestation des graveurs et la publication de l’édit de Saint-Jean-de-Luz par lequel le roi assure définitivement que le métier demeurera libre. Ce Lavenage était toutefois un inconnu complet, entraînant des spéculations diverses sur son identité, depuis deux siècles. Nous proposons de l’identifier à Jacques Seton, sieur de Lavenage, membre de la Garde écossaise du roi, qui perd sa charge autour de 1660 dans les transformations de l’organisation de l’État qui se font jour sous Mazarin.
