French Colonies in the 17th Century: Mercantilism and European Imperialistic Challenges

Abstract
French colonisation in the xviith century has been particularly important in the French West Indies and in Canada. To contextualize it properly one must relate it to the endeavours of the kingdom to develop international maritime trade. Together with colonisation, this trade can be properly understood only in relation to mercantilism, as a state political and economic doctrine, which itself must be related to the rivalries between the major European states of the time. The article is based on the writings of two major statesmen, Richelieu and Colbert, who conceived and implemented the mercantilist policy. The conclusion raises the issue of the relative wealth of data on the population of the colonies, which sharply contrasts with the scarcity of those on the French population.
