A joint project between Department Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) and National Research Council (NRC) is studying the effect of the Confederation Bridge on the ice regime (DFO) and the ice forces on the Bridge (NRC). As part of the project, helicopter-borne sensors were used during the winters of 1999 and 2000 to monitor the mobile pack ice properties near the Bridge connecting Prince Edward Island (PEI) to Canada’s mainland. Complementary ice drift and ice draft data were collected using moorings near the Bridge (Belliveau et al., 2001). Helicopter-borne sensors collected ice thickness and surface roughness profiles from both sides of the bridge to document the variations in pack ice properties caused by the bridge as the ice moves back-and-forth due to tidal currents and wind forcing. A second helicopter system collected video images to document the changes in ice concentration and floe size estimates. After discussing the observations collected by helicopter sensors, the data is compared to ice draft data collected by an upward looking sonar moored besides the Bridge.
