Abstract
The rationale for growing forages on organic farms ranges from the dogmatic, dating back at least to the deductive experience of Sir Albert Howard in the early 20th century, to more contemporary awareness of the ecological and agronomic services performed by forages. Traditional organic farming was mixed crop and livestock farming, with livestock providing an economic justification for growing the forages needed to sustain the land and provide other benefits. The ecological parallels between forage and native vegetation facilitate harnessing natural processes to perform agricultural services. Forages, including cover crops, have long been valued as system service crops. In place of forages, conservation tillage became a substitute that allowed continuous cash cropping in the absence of livestock. Nitrogen retention is of particular importance on organic farms because of the time and effort needed to generate in situ N within crop rotations.
