Abstract
One might be forgiven for thinking that darkest Alaska might be mistaken for the darkest Africa that captured the imagination of journalists and travelers in the late nineteenth century; but the author is correct in his analogy. What he seeks to portray, and does with effect, is that Alaska was the subject not so much of imaginings but of transients' observations. As Robert Campbell says in the conclusion, the tourists keep arriving in Alaska—perhaps on the bus to Mount McKinley (Denali), a railway to some wilderness depot, or a flight of aerial examination. Then they leave with impressions and souvenirs. From just below my window here where I write, the cruise ships periodically pass on their voyage north through the so-called inside passage, which separates Vancouver Island from the British Columbia mainland, then shape their course north to Skagway and Glacier Bay. Such commercial traffic has been plying this route since the 1870s, and, as Campbell notes, various environmental obstacles to safe and easy navigation have presented themselves along the way. In one of his most telling passages, he recounts the navigational dangers of Seymour Narrows, British Columbia, where furious tide rips and churning waters posed a lethal danger at low tide. The impediment—Ripple Rock—has since been eliminated by man-made explosion, but in the time that Campbell is exploring, it was a graveyard of shipping. The environmental particulars of Alaska (and the Northwest Coast in general) present a wonderful backdrop for his human history.
