Abstract
ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Der vorliegende Aufsatz untersucht Canisius’ Umgang mit den Kirchenvätern am Beispiel seiner erstmals 1562 publizierten Auswahl aus den Briefen des Hieronymus. Es wird gegen Joseph Lössl die These vertreten, daß Canisius’ Interesse an den Kirchenvätern vor einem kontroverstheologischen Hintergrund zu sehen ist: Canisius bezeichnete die Kirchenväter in seinen Briefen als Zeugen der immerwährenden katholischen Wahrheit gegen die neue, ketzerische Lehre der Protestanten. Die Untersuchung der Paratexte der Hieronymusausgabe - Vorwort, Kurzfassungen (argumenta) und Marginalien - macht deutlich, daß konfessionelle Belange und nicht humanistische Philologie die herausgeberische Tätigkeit des Jesuiten motivierten. Die Edition des Canisius präsentiert einen Hieronymus, der als „malleus haereticorum“ den katholischen Glauben entschieden verteidigte.
