Abstract
This article enhances our knowledge of the construction of social inequalities in health by examining social policies that specifically relate to work/ family balance. The article focuses on the period of a child’s birth and argues that the latter is also a public health issue. Based on examples drawn from research studies conducted in France and Québec, a gap can be observed between the goals set when adopting regulatory and social measures aimed at protecting pregnant women at work or those who are on maternity leave, and the result of their implementation given the context of social relations. Particular attention is focused on maternity leave in France and Québec’s policy of re-assigning pregnant workers. Paid employment provides mothers with many advantages that they do not want to give up. However, the data presented suggest that in both Québec and France, the measures included in public policies and programs are not fully effective because they take shape in a social and cultural reality which limits the recognition of the legitimacy of women’s work and employment.
