TOWARD ASSESSING FINANCIAL RETURNS FROM GREEN STRUCTURAL AND INFRASTRUCTURAL EXPENDITURES.

Abstract
Research on green operations has continued to evolve to consider a broad range of management decisions, programs and technologies that contribute to greener operations. Given that recently much attention has focused on structural changes such as pollution prevention, we argue that infrastructural expenditures, i.e., management practices including monitoring, assessments, auditing, administering environmental programs, and environmental training, now are likely to form an important strategic resource. Multi-year establishment-level data merged from Canadian government databases provided a unique basis for assessing the financial implications. Both increasing expenditures on and allocating a greater allocation toward management practices yielded positive financial returns across several specific cost and inventory metrics.
