Three-dimensional DMFC anodes were prepared by galvanostatic electrodeposition of PtRu(Mo) catalytic particles onto compressed graphite felt in the presence of the nonionic surfactant Triton X-100. The Mo containing catalyst yielded higher power densities at 343 K and 353 K compared to PtRu, while utilizing about 50 % lower Pt and total catalyst loadings. The 3D anode design with PtRu catalyst yielded improved performance compared to a commercially available gas diffusion electrode with approximately equal Pt loading (~26 g m-2); i.e. at 3000 A m-2 and 333 K the power density was increased by ~38 %.
