The effectiveness of grouting fractured rock depends on the distance that grout penetrates into individual fractures and spreads into connected fracture networks. Assessing grout spread, and the consequent effect on groundwater flow, requires consideration of the 3-D geometry and hydraulic properties of the natural fracture network. Discrete fracture network (DFN) modeling, conditioned to site characterization data, suggests grouting is most effective if the volume injected is based on that stage's fracture aperture: Aperture Controlled Grouting (ACG). The ACG procedure differs from the familiar GIN procedure in that: i) grout take is now a requirement to be met based on stage Lugeon value, not an outcome that depends on the mixture of grout rheology and injection pressure; and, ii) grout mix is now varied, depending on ground response, to achieve the required pressure build. This paper discusses the basis of ACG grouting; a companion paper at this conference (Bonin et al. 2012) presents the field procedures.
