Abstract
Among the themes figured on the Etruscan urns, the adventure of Ulysses and Sirens holds an important place, particularly in Volterra. Yet only the Sirens are well attested in Greece, and the Odyssean episode is rarely figured. We have to wait until the third quarter of the fourth century BC, to find it represented in Italy, on a Paestan crater (Berlin 4532), and especially on the Hellenistic Etruscan urns which constitute its main medium. The basic scheme of this series (twenty-three urns in Volterra and one in Perugia) seems rather homogeneous. This paper considers whether it deviates from previous representations or whether it seems to be inspired by cartoons that might have circulated throughout the Hellenistic world, whether it is unique or whether it is found in other themes. A careful study of variations in detail within the series enables us to draw conclusions about the presence of different workshops and the evolution of the theme.
