‘J'ai, je vous le répète, la très ferme intention d'aller m'installer à Honfleur.’2 C'est dans une lettre du 11 janvier 1858 que Baudelaire fantasme pour la première fois son déménagement en Basse-Normandie. Obsédé par les soucis de la vie parisienne, il rêve d'en finir avec ces tracas; et la maison qu'habite Madame Aupick sur la Côte de Grâce lui paraît renfermer une promesse de calme studieuse: ‘J'ai fait part à quelques amis du projet que j'ai de m'installer à Honfleur. Tout le monde me dit que c'est un trait de génie.’3 Ce projet d'une installation définitive n'aura jamais lieu: Honfleur ne représente pour Baudelaire qu'une ‘construction mentale et cathartique’4 où le hic et nunc parisien s’épure dans un là-bas qui déjoue les pièges de la ‘fourmillante cité’.5 Une brève visite, au mois de novembre, excite sa fantaisie: ‘c'est ce qu'il me faut’ écrit-il alors à Poulet-Malassis, pour réparer ‘seize ans de fainéantise’.6 À la fin de janvier 1859, il débarque finalement chez sa mère. Le séjour honfleurais s'avère fécond: la ‘Muse de la mer’7 lui dicte les quelques grands poèmes de la deuxième édition des Fleurs: ‘Les Sept Vieillards’, ‘Les Petites Vieilles’, ‘La Chevelure’, ‘Le Voyage’ (il travaille aussi au Salon de 1859 et à l'adaptation des Confessions of an English Opium-Eater). Il n'avait été si productif depuis 1842–46; il ne le sera plus par la suite. Rentré sur Paris en juillet 1859, il ne quittera l'Hôtel de Dieppe que pour Bruxelles, d'où il ne cessera de caresser le projet d'un retour: ‘Mon installation à Honfleur a toujours été le plus cher de mes rêves’ écrit-t-il à Madame Aupick le 5 mars 1866,8 dix jours à peine avant de s'effondrer sur les dalles de l’église de Namur, atteint d'une hémiplégie.
