Abstract

Wave breaking inception is investigated under laboratory conditions for regular and irregular wave trains breaking over 1D and 2D bathymetries. New breaking criteria incorporating the spatial wave slope "just before" breaking as a parameter are formulated and existing breaking criteria are assessed. The distortion of phase velocity of regular wave trains propagating over a shoal bathymetry is also investigated. The new wave breaking criteria are introduced into a novel, mild-slope equation based, finite volume numerical model. Non-linear amplitude dispersion and energy dissipation due to wave breaking and bottom friction are also taken into account. The numerical predictions are in good agreement with the collected and other existing experimental data.
