Abstract
A new urban quarter is developing within the area bordering the inner city of Essen/Germany, dominated by industrial uses until 1992, where people can live, work, shop and enjoy themselves. Mixed use instead of functional division is the motto. The use of an industrial monument as a musical theater has been the hoped- for initial spark for revitalization of this industrial wasteland. Hotels have relocated in the vicinity and trade has clearly been given a fresh impetus. In the meantime, integrated locations with flexible working hours have become more interesting to companies from the service sector than sterile office parks. A musical theater, a mu ltipl ex cinema, restaurants and further leisure facilities have made the socalled Weststadt a focus of entertainment in Essen.
