The local mass transport effect in the oxidation of small organic molecules on polycrystalline platinum was studied. A transient increase in RDE rotation rate caused an increase in methanol and ethanol oxidation current, in contrast to a reduced current in slower experiments with a sustained increase in rotation rate. Sweep hold experiments during the initial stages of the oxidation peak in the positive going scan, also showed an increase in oxidation current with increased rotation rate. This effect slowly turned off and resulted in a lower current density with time. The increased current density was explained in terms of a temporary increase in consumption of alcohol to soluble products, while a more competitive formation of strongly adsorbed species explained the reduced current with sustained rotation. Parallels between ethanol and methanol oxidation are drawn.
