Abstract
Practitioners, when examining questions of sexuality in the elderly are usually referring to people in their sixties and seventies, ignoring the needs, expressions and desires of a much older population. The Terrace Women's Group at the Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care has been in existence for 8 years, providing a forum for older women to discuss gender and identity issues against a backdrop of rich, varied, challenging and long lives. This paper will describe and present some of the issues and feelings of these women as well as the evolution of their disclosure. Issues of ageism, feminism and both the personal and professional role of the group leader in encouraging this dialogue will be addressed.
