Abstract
Dans la seconde moitié du XIX e siècle à Montréal, Olivier Berthelet, un bourgeois canadien-français, fonde l’Hospice Saint-Joseph de Montréal. Il passe par la suite aux mains des Sœurs Grises qui y accueillent principalement des « orphelines ». Dans le cadre de la société patriarcale, où les femmes sont généralement reléguées à la sphère privée, ces sœurs parviennent néanmoins à administrer leur institution. Elles offrent aux nombreux enfants qu’elles accueillent dans des conditions précaires, un toit, de la nourriture, une vie disciplinée réglée par la religion catholique et fondée sur une éducation qui respecte les valeurs associées au rôle « maternel » des femmes et à la hiérarchie des classes sociales. Bien que les sœurs y respectent ces valeurs promulguées par les élites de l’époque, l’hospice ne s’est pas révélé être une institution d’enfermement qui visait principalement à discipliner les familles pauvres, mais plutôt un lieu ouvert, qui tentait de s’adapter aux besoins matériels, familiaux, éducatifs et spirituels des familles.
