Investigation of P‐wave attenuation of massive sulfide and host rocks

Abstract
This paper presents the results of laboratory measurements of P-wave attenuation of massive sulfides and associated host rocks. The pulse transmission technique has been used, in which ultrasonic waveforms are passed along the axis of core specimens at hydrostatic confining pressures ranging from 10 MPa to 600 MPa. The spectral ratio method has been used to estimate the attenuation quality factor (Q). Preliminary results show that massive sulfide ore bodies are more attenuative compared to host rocks suggesting the possibility of attenuation tomography for mapping massive sulfides.
