El Mapo Grande: A Geophysical Investigation of the San Marcos Pueblo, NM

Abstract
San Marcos Pueblo, an archaeologically significant site south of Santa Fe inhabited for more than 400 years prior to 1680, has been studied by Summer of Applied Geophysical Experience (SAGE) since 2004. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), electromagnetic (EM) and magnetic data were acquired on 30m by 30m quadrangles tiling most of a 150m by 150m area. This “El Mapo Grande”, is the largest high resolution geophysical map that SAGE has produced at the site. The area contains all or part of eight room blocks and a large plaza. There are also seven high resolution seismic refraction lines within the map area. Spanish colonial period metallurgical activity is known to have occurred in the mapped area (Ramenofsky, et al., 2003). SAGE has previously identified two kivas, circular semi-underground ceremonial chambers, near the map’s northern boundary (Hinz et al., 2008). The combination of high resolution, 0.5m line interval and broad coverage has made it possible to interpret a number of new features of potential archaeological interest.
