Lake Ontario is the most downstream of the Great Lakes that define part of the boundary between Canada and the United States. It receives its water from the four other Great Lakes as well as from its local watershed. It discharges water into the St. Lawrence River that flows northeastward past Montreal and Quebec into the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the Atlantic Ocean. The levels of Lake Ontario and the upper portion of the river and the flows and levels in the lower portion of the St. Lawrence River are regulated, to some extent, by the operation of the Moses Saunders Dam that separates these two river portions.
