Abstract
HST mosaic shows M101 detailArchived observations with the Hubble Space Telescope have been put together to create this immensely detailed image of M101, the Pinwheel Galaxy.At 16 000 × 12 000 pixels, and made from 51 HST images, it is the largest and most detailed image of a spiral galaxy ever released by Hubble.M101 is 170 000 light years across and contains perhaps 100 billion stars like the Sun.Star-forming nebulae can be seen in the spiral arms, which are themselves picked out by clusters of hot young blue stars.Images used for this mosaic came from the Advanced Camera for Surveys, the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 between 1994 and 2003, together with ground-based images visible at the edges, from the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope and the Kitt Peak National Observatory, and individual images using red (infrared) green and blue filters.
