The Shanghai Center is slated to be the tallest building in China, topping out at a height of 632 m. Due to the tower being situated in a typhoon zone, as well as its height and unusual shape, RWDI undertook a comprehensive wind engineering program. The program included an initial, exploratory set of tests which were done to assist the project team in optimizing the tower's shape and orientation with respect to the prevailing winds. Once the shape had been finalized, detailed tests were conducted which included a pressure study, an aeroelastic model study, and a high-speed Reynold's number test because of the tower's rounded corners. Based on the wind engineering studies, Thornton-Tomasetti was then able to develop an efficient design for the tower that consisted of super-columns with outriggers that work in conjunction with the inner building core, comprising an effective system for resisting wind loads.
