Abstract
Several methods have been proposed to reduce the moment and axial force demands on the columns of steel plate shear walls. One such method is to reduce the strength of the infill plate by introducing a regular pattern of perforations in the form of circular holes. The decrease in shear strength of the system depends on the diameter of the holes and their centre-to-centre distance. It was found using a variety of finite element models that although introducing the perforations may reduce the lateral strength of the system, the total demand on the columns can in some cases actually increase. Also, the perforated system is sensitive to the pattern of holes selected in that a small change in the arrangement of the holes can have a significant effect on the moment demand on the columns. Moreover, the flexibility of the beam-to-column connections affects the column demands considerably and also influences the sensitivity of the column design forces to the pattern of holes selected. An appropriate design method is proposed and the suitability of this system is summarized.
