L’enquête porte sur la dimension graphique de la pensée chez le philosophe américain Charles S. Peirce (1839-1914). Si l’on a déjà bien exploré les aspects logique et mathématique du système diagrammatique inventé par Peirce, celui des « Graphes Existentiels », on a en revanche été peu sensible à la forme concrète de ce dispositif dans les manuscrits de l’auteur. L’examen de cette forme, de son élaboration sémiotique et des questions philosophiques qu’elle soulève révèle notamment l’importance de la notion d’interface dans les diagrammes peircéens. Pour la démontrer, je retrace à travers les manuscrits le fil d’une discussion occasionnée par une tache d’encre venue noircir le carnet de Peirce un jour de 1894, puis j’analyse la pertinence de cette discussion relativement aux Graphes Existentiels.
