Abstract
La Compagnie des îles de l’Amérique, reformée en 1635 à l’initiative du cardinal de Richelieu, fait du développement des cultures d’exportation comme la canne à sucre une priorité de sa politique économique dans les Petites Antilles françaises. Elle possède une vaste habitation à la Guadeloupe, la famille, sur laquelle elle fonde de grands espoirs. Cependant, elle ne réalise pas de bons résultats malgré les milliers de livres investis. Les difficultés rencontrées dans la gestion des établissements sous son autorité la conduisent finalement à vendre les îles. Le sucre aura-t-il été sa perte ?
