Abstract
This study of the welfare state by Nicholas Timmins first appeared in 1995. No other book covered the entire history since Beveridge with anything like its confidence and accessibility. Across the whole scope of its coverage Timmins provided a great deal of basic technical detail, but this was effortlessly blended in with a lively political narrative. Naturally, the large and enthusiastic readership of this book looked forward to this second edition, which contains the commentary of Timmins on the action-packed events of the last six years.
