As part of an inquiry on drainage practices and oil water separators for transformer stations, various international guidelines were reviewed, as well as information on available commercial products. In addition, the authors contacted a number of Canadian, American and European specialists from utilities and/or their consultants. While the number of participants in this inquiry is, at present, limited, their comments are based on the broad experience of these specialists. As a result of the inquiry, it was found that oil water separators used in transformer stations are of several different general types. The inquiry also revealed that, with the different regulatory experiences and other site-specific conditions, there will always be differences in the strategies of the various utilities. It is also necessary to consider that utilities can use various competing commercial systems and that the state of the art of drainage technology is evolving rapidly. The international inquiry was useful in generating comments from some of the participants.
