Abstract
Résumé La portée éthique des travaux de Claude Lévi-Strauss n’est pas d’emblée facile à établir, mais l’importance des décentrements qu’ils ont provoqués est telle qu’il est utile d’y réfléchir. C’est d’abord l’Occident qui fut contraint au décentrement : il n’y a pas d’états arriérés des peuples indigènes. La diversité des cultures est chose essentielle au progrès. Le relativisme souvent reproché à l’ethnologue n’interdit pas la critique, tout au contraire. Il mène à une forme de sagesse proche de celle de Montaigne. Le travail sur le mythe permet un décentrement de la conscience et du sujet car le mythe est une pensée anonyme : il n’y a pas à tout céder au sujet ! À la recherche des lois universelles qui structurent l’esprit humain, Claude Lévi-Strauss repense l’opposition entre nature et culture : il est impossible de l’hypostasier, contrairement au primat de la conscience propre à l’anthropocentrisme occidental. L’appartenance commune à la nature revêt une dimension fondatrice. En fait, l’œuvre de Cl. Lévi-Strauss ne permet pas de fonder une éthique. Elle ébranle certaines habitudes de pensée. Elle est, avant tout, exploratrice et clarificatrice.
