The use of the methods based on the propagation of surface waves increased significantly during last decade. These methods give opportunity to evaluate the shear wave velocity profile from the ground surface without intrusion. The precise evaluation of Vs as a function of depth can find a large variety of application in geotechnical engineering since Vs is a fundamental parameter defined in the true insitu conditions. In order to evaluate Vs with precision, this paper shows through a number of examples the necessity to correctly isolate and use the different Rayleigh modes present in the field records.
