Abstract
Dans la grande région de Montréal, la tempête de verglas de janvier 1998, qui a plongé dans le noir des centaines de milliers de personnes pendant plusieurs jours, nous a fait prendre conscience de la fragilité du réseau aérien de distribution d’électricité. Cet événement a également relancé la discussion sur l’enfouissement des lignes électriques de distribution. En plus des avantages techniques propres à la pratique d’enfouissement, l’aménagement de quartiers sans fil serait, selon ses défenseurs, visuellement plus agréable et pourrait aussi contribuer à augmenter les valeurs foncières des propriétés s’y trouvant. Bref, les environnements sans fil donneraient du prestige aux quartiers urbains et aux lotissements résidentiels. Certaines municipalités particulièrement soucieuses de la qualité de leur environnement bâti et paysager ont, depuis plusieurs décennies, mis en œuvre des programmes d’enfouissement des fils ou encore préconisé l’implantation des infrastructures dans les ruelles, à l’abri du regard.
