Abstract
The aim of this paper is to present some comments on the topic of personal quest in the contemporary female Bildungsromane Rubyfruit Jungle (USA, 1973), by Rita Mae Brown, Hotel du Lac (England, 1984), by Anita Brookner, and A Complicated Kindness (Canada, 2004), by Miriam Toews. The process of learning and transformation into confrontation with the heroines' reality shows that there is a contradiction between the status achieved by women in contemporary society and their respective representation. Therefore, the theme of quest involves their desire for identi ty, personal and professional fulfillment, and freedom of self-expression exposes the strong influ ence of unequal gender relations in the protagonists' power to choose and make decisions.
