Hosptial Pharmacists in Quebec Achieve Higher Salaries in Contract with Government

Abstract
After 2 years of negotiations, the association representing Quebec's hospital pharmacists has reached agreement with the province on a new contract that raises salaries and narrows the gap between pharmacists working in hospitals and those in community pharmacy. Members of l'Association des pharmaciens des etablissements de sante du Quebec (A.P.E.S.) unanimously approved the agreement at a special meeting in Montreal on July 29, 2012. Under the deal, Quebec's hospital pharmacists are to be paid $42.59 an hour — up from $37.68 under the previous contract. Pharmacists working in the private sector earn an average of $51 an hour, according to the association, which says the new contract narrows the salary gap between hospital and community pharmacists to 14%, down from 35%. The group has long been advocating for increased compensation, saying the comparatively low salaries have contributed to a significant shortage of pharmacists in Quebec hospitals.
