Abstract
This is a somewhat unique project for Canadian academics: a volume that looks like a classic coffee table book but reflects solid academic research and is aimed at both a popular and scholarly audience. Supported by a private foundation and edited by Steven High, an expert on the history of U.S. military bases in Newfoundland, Bermuda, and the Caribbean, the book offers a broad look at the Newfoundland capital during a pivotal time in its history and provides a rich visual record of the city in wartime, with dozens of photographs. Fifty oral interviews augment the human element. Academics will take comfort in the fact that this interesting collection is peer‐reviewed and includes endnotes and an index.
