When attempting to evaluate the structural condition of a concrete structure to develop an appropriate plan for future use, a thorough understanding of the concrete is mandatory. The first phase of any evaluation is to identify a qualified team of investigators. The person in charge should be a structural engineer who has passed his or her professional engineers examination and is in good standing within his or her profession. The lead engineer first should perform an extensive review of all existing information about the structure, which, among other materials, includes the design documents, construction records and the service history of the structure. This paper is an abridgment of Chapter 16, "Concrete," in Ratay, Robert T., ed. (2005). Structural Condition Assessment, John Wiley & Sons, Inc., Hoboken, NJ.
