Many currently marketed “energy” drinks include taurine as an ingredient. It has been suggested that taurine has ergogenic properties, but scientific evidence in support of this claim is lacking. Previous studies have examined the effects of supplements containing taurine and many additional ingredients, but not taurine alone. PURPOSE: This study was designed to examine whether taurine (T) ingestion just prior to exercise would improve endurance performance during prolonged cycling as compared to placebo (PL) ingestion and a second placebo (PL2) ingestion, where subjects were told they were receiving taurine, but were not. METHODS: Eleven endurance trained male cyclists and triathletes (age, 28.6 ± 1.9 yr; mass, 74.9 ± 2.7 kg; VO2max, 56.7 ± 1.6 ml/kg/min) performed 2 practice trials, where they cycled at ∼65% of their VO2max for 90 min followed immediately by a time trial where they completed 5 kJ of work/kg body mass as fast as possible. The subjects then completed 3 experimental trials where they consumed 500 ml of Crystal Light™ with either 2000 mg of taurine (T) or nothing added (PL, PL2) 1 hour prior to the 90 min sub-maximal cycle and time trial. The trials were conducted in a randomized, cross-over design. The T and PL trials were administered in a double blind fashion and the PL2 trial was single blind. All meals and snacks 24 hours prior to each trial were provided to the subject to ensure identical diets and macronutrient composition (62% carbohydrate; 24% fat; 14% protein) for each trial. The subjects consumed a sports drink at regular intervals during the cycling trials and ingested the same amount of fluid and carbohydrate in all trials. Expired gas was collected at 15 min intervals during the 90 min sub-maximal cycle. Heart rate and rating of perceived exertion were taken at 15 min intervals throughout the entire ride and at exhaustion. RESULTS: There was no difference in time trial performance between trials (T, 1648 ± 121 vs. PL, 1572 ± 93 vs. PL2, 1561 ± 87 sec). Measured O2 consumption (T, 2.931 ± 0.125 vs. PL, 2.943 ± 0.113 vs. PL2, 2.929 ± 0.111 1/min), CO2 production and calculated respiratory exchange ratios (T, 0.907 ± 0.013 vs. PL, 0.900 ± 0.012 vs. PL2, 0.918 ± 0.010) were unaffected by taurine ingestion or the verbal suggestion that taurine had been ingested. There were also no differences between trials in the heart rate and RPE responses during the 90 min of sub-maximal cycling and the time trial. CONCLUSION: These data indicate that the acute ingestion of 2000 mg of taurine 1 hour before exercise does not enhance time trial performance following prolonged sub-maximal cycling in endurance-trained cyclists and triathletes.
