A Case Study of Multi-pole Acoustic Logging in Heavy Oil Sand Reservoirs

Abstract
Summary The multi-pole acoustic logging tool (MPAL) was tested in the heavy oil sand reservoirs of Canada. Compared with shale, the P-wave slowness measured in heavy oil sand does not change obviously, with the value of about 125µs/ft; the dipole shear wave slowness decreases significantly to 275µs/ft. The heavy oil sand has a Vp/Vs value of less than 2.4. The slowness and amplitude of the shear wave are good lithology discriminators that have great differences between heavy oil sand and shale. The heavy oil sand reservoir is anisotropic. The crossover phenomenon in the fast and slow dipole shear wave dispersion curves indicates that the anisotropy is induced by the unbalanced horizontal stress in the region.
