Finite Element Modelling of Upheaval Buckling of Buried offshore Pipelines in Clayey Soils

Abstract
Offshore oil and gas pipelines are often buried to provide environmental stability and protection. Many of these pipes are prone to upheaval buckling and trenches are backfilled to provide soil restraint for the pipelines to resist uplift forces. Soil failure mechanisms can extend to the surface (shallow) or remain in the soil body (deep); the exact conditions that cause this transition are currently unclear. A parametric study of pipeline upheaval buckling in clays has been conducted using the finite element analysis. Mechanisms of failure and pullout forces were investigated for immediate breakaway and fully bonded conditions for undrained rough pipelines. The results indicate that uplift factors (Nc) are similar to those found for plate anchors, with values approximately 4.5 to 6.5%) greater for the pipelines. The critical normalised embedment depths (H/D) for the transition from shallow to deep mechanisms occur between 5 to 6 for both anchors and pipelines.
