The first arrival clock‐times from a number of receivers are used to estimate the clock‐time of a microseismic event and to estimate its 3D location. A 2D source location using the Apollonius method was extended to 3D. However, the 2D solution is restricted to three non‐collinear receivers and the 3D solution required four non‐coplanar receivers. These restrictions are typically violated when receivers are placed on the surface or in a well. Non Apollonius solutions are presented for these restricted cases along with analysis that relates the accuracy of the estimated source location to the accuracy of the velocity.
