Abstract The Aruma formation is the shallowest hydrocarbon-bearing reservoir in the Bahrain field. It contains heavy oil and bitumen irregularly distributed in fractured and vuggy carbonate rocks, making reservoir characterization and hydrocarbon production particularly challenging. The best analog for the Aruma accumulation is the Grosmont bitumen accumulation in Canada, where bitumen is also present in fractures and vugs in carbonate rocks. A field test of cyclic steam stimulation (CSS) in the Aruma formation was implemented in November 2014. The primary objective of the Aruma CSS pilot was to prove that it is possible to mobilize heavy oil and bitumen in the Aruma reservoir and produce it to the surface. This pilot objective was achieved.
