In this paper, we present a novel star tracker concept that uses a colour CMOS detector to help identify stars. We demonstrate how the star centroid and colour information can be extracted from raw image data without the need to de-mosaic the detector output. Colour data can be retained as a pair of band-pass response ratios (i.e., blue-green and red-green) or used to estimate the black-body temperature of the target star. This analysis leads to a simple method that can be used to augment a typical star catalog with reference spectral information. We demonstrate our techniques on a series of laboratory tests (incandescent and xenon arc lamps) and night sky observations.
