Novel Mesoporous Nanotitania/Carbon Composite Electrodes for Electrochemical Energy Storage

Abstract
A novel fabrication method comprising screen printing and sintering of nanotitania/carbon paste was developed in order to build binder-free electrodes for lithium-ion energy storage devices. As active material the commercial (P25) nanotitania was used. These electrodes were compared to those fabricated using the standard binder-based method. Physical characterization demonstrated that the novel method provided more carbon dispersion, smaller agglomerate size, and higher packing density (without the loss of interconnectivity or pore size) than the standard one. Electrochemical testing indicated that the novel method-built electrodes are exhibiting higher conductivity and specific capacity than electrodes made with the same active material and carbon plus binder. The specific charging (delithiation) capacity of the novel method electrodes was 162 mA h g -1 compared to 134 mA h g -1 for the standard method, representing 96 and 80% of the theoretical capacity respectively.
