Abstract
The Canadian Forces have procured X-band and military Ka-band satellite capacity on the USA Wideband Global Satellite (WGS) system. Currently available terminals can operate in each of these bands with some of them providing a manually switchable front end to change the band of operation. The Communications Research Centre Canada (CRC) has developed different multi-band reflectarray antennas as satellite terminal in the last decade [1-3]. These reflectarray antennas provide simultaneous communication in multiple bands henceforth the flexibility to transmit in one band and receive in the other band. In this paper, we present the challenges involved in the design and operation of a particular reflectarray configuration for a multi-band terminal application. The pros and cons of this mutli-band reflectarray antenna are presented and different alternatives to overcome the disadvantage of this design are discussed.
