Study of the Electrochemical Oxidation of H2 on Ni/YSZ

Abstract
The results of an experimental investigation of the electrochemical oxidation of H2 on Ni/YSZ interfaces based on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) are presented. An optimized single atmosphere 3-electrode configuration was used to avoid EIS distortions. Charge-transfer coefficients and exchange currents were determined as a function of the electrode overpotential, partial pressures, and temperature (700 to 800{degree sign}C). Both current-overpotential curves and EIS results indicate that the overall oxidation rate is possibly limited by a chemical and an electrochemical process. The electrochemical process is a second electron-donation step, while the chemical step could be related to the formation of a NiO layer or, more likely, to adsorption of charged intermediates with surface coverages that vary with the overpotential. The results were compared to postulated reaction mechanisms.
